Part of the problem with using this blog to write my book is that many readers -- and even I -- expect me to react to big news in blogspeed. Alas, writing a book demands thinking in bookspeed. Otherwise I would just paste all these blog posts together and create a big PDF for everyone to download.

Instead I am trying to get to the big themes that events like the Microsoft bid for Yahoo reveals. As of today, I don't have anything more interesting to write than you have already read in newspapers and other blogs.

I am reading voraciously on the subject. If you can tip me off to things I should not miss, I would be in your debt.

I might be able to generate relevant thoughts in a few days.

In the mean time, Boing Boingis the best place to keep up with these developments.

1. Chance plays an enormous role in life and in business.

2. Sometimes people grasp at straws.

3. Sometimes there is just no there, there.

There is a zen to the above. For more elaboration I would recommend the following to read on your toilet:

This blog, the result of a collaboration between myself and the Institute for the Future of the Book, is dedicated to exploring the process of writing a critical interpretation of the actions and intentions behind the cultural behemoth that is Google, Inc. The book will answer three key questions: What does the world look like through the lens of Google?; How is Google's ubiquity affecting the production and dissemination of knowledge?; and how has the corporation altered the rules and practices that govern other companies, institutions, and states?
