The world has become a technology driven and connected marketplace where businesses with the latest technological gadget or software often take top honors plus money in a world market place. One of the leading businesses taking advantage of technology to drive its expansion and growth is Google. There most likely isn’t anyone who uses or has used the internet that hasn’t used Google, the U.S. multinational based in California has been listed as one of the most visited websites in the world.

The Google brand continues to expand its global reach into several different internet sectors from web applications to its current drive towards driver-less road technology. But, is Google’s expansion necessarily a good thing? Googlization is a term that’s been coined to describe the company’s rise and reach into various technology sectors that call into question competitive business access to a marketplace dominated by the company plus relationship between opposing commercial interests and the company itself.

It’s commonly known that Google has great commercial reach, its web-based email service continues to outpace its Microsoft rival, Bing. But, it isn’t just in web-based email and search engines that Google’s reach is being felt. Google has competitive shares in news delivery, mobile phone networks, video sharing plus it has entered into partnerships with media giants such as Time Warner and news agencies like the Associated Press plus the UK press association. This entanglement with so many firms involved in the distribution of news and technology has led to concerns of a growing Google monopoly on the competitive technological marketplace.

It is because of its global reach that Google has faced some criticisms about its domination over almost all forms of informational commerce on the web. Over recent years, the company has faced growing criticisms over its involvement with special interest groups such as political advocacy groups such as Heritage Action to a growing reach into intelligence and counter terrorism analysis.

It is becoming important to understand that any style of monopoly in any marketplace does the following:

  • Limits innovation in favor of a single model
  • Monopolies are bad for consumers driving up costs
  • Silences critics
  • Leaves business open to the influence of wealthy special interest groups

These are only a few reasons that Googlization can mean the death of innovation and a competitive internet marketplace.

Why Googlization lessens the power of innovation:

Innovation drives a thriving marketplace, but if consumers are only allowed a single view point then innovation ends up becoming dulled. American and western innovation success has been due to the creativity of several individuals into the knowledge stream of a collective, so without that individual spark innovation starts to die.
It has been said that having an open mind allows better thoughts to be dropped into it and that statement certainly holds true for continuing the spark of innovation.

How Monopolies drive up consumer prices:

Google’s expanding influence into the technological marketplace could see prices for services involving its products begin to rise. Because without industry competition, the Google model would become the market price without an affordable alternative. But, it isn’t just in raising prices that Googlization could present potential problems, a marketplace without viable alternatives could become ripe for abuse where the serving monopoly could easily choose to refuse service or provide a product to a company thus potentially driving that company off of the business playing field.

Without alternatives in a googlization market, suppliers within the firm could refuse to serve an area with lower income potential that could affect income within a region. This leads to the silencing of any type of critic against the monopoly and opens the door to the further expansion of special interests into a monopoly system.

It’s because of this that during the early 80s the break-up of the Bell system in the United States was mandated. The modern day monopoly had cornered telephone services into a single service controlled by AT & T Corporation requiring the creation of an antitrust lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice to break-up the monopoly that had been created.

Why Googlization should be watched:

With so much at stake, googlization should and must be monitored in order to ensure a competitive marketplace that continues to see the logic behind open innovation that supports that supports the growth and development of new business models that lie behind a thriving business sector. By watching and understanding the factors driving googlization in today’s marketplace, competitors can create counteractive moves to lessen its effect while continuing to see innovation move forward in a manner that could be of benefit to all.
