What are the costs and benefits of this service? What are the privacy implications?

Why focus on Google only? If you are worried about privacy there are many more sites that reveal a whole lot more and where people reveal a lot more about themselves. Look at Facebook, myspace, yahoo to name a few - there are many others. All those companies store and have access to all that information about all their users. Even if Google knows your search trends, that is nothing compared to the amount of personal information on most social networking sites. Also Friend Connect allows anyone to add a bit of social interaction to their site. If you're worried about this, don't login and don't add stuff, then you won't be identified. Easy
